Look out for signs on the gate

Wasps love New Zealand as they have no natural predators here. So humans need to help get rid of them.
In our beech forest the wasps eat lots and lots of Honeydew which is produced by the trees. This means they are eating food that our native birds, lizards and insects need.

Wooden rodent trap.

The rodent traps that you see in Mears Bush are wooden boxes with a snap trap mechanism. When a rodent trigger’s the mechanism the trap  snaps and kills it.

You should always make sure that you have your dogs on leash at all times because of the rodent traps.

Vespex is used in Mears Bush to catch wasps. You need to be an approved user so it is a very controlled process. The bait is protein based and will attract wasps but not bees. Keep and eye out for the signs indicating that wasp bait is being used as you enter a site. Make sure you keep children and dogs away from the bait.

Rodent traps are set on the forest floor.

What Mears Bush is trying to trap? The aim is to get rid of the rodents like rats, mice and possums. Rats and mice prey on native species and eat just about everything like seeds, fruits, eggs, chicks and insects. Possums eat dead animals, insects, rodents and birds as well as, eggs, frogs, and plants.
